Signed Fred Grandy Photo

Date: c. 1980

Description: This is a signed photograph of Fred Grandy, a co-star of the ABC Television Series The Love Boat, which ran from 1977 to 1987. Grandy was famous for his role as Gopher on the show, but he also went on to the House of Representatives, representing Iowa, and other various television and radio performances. But fewer people know that Fred Grandy was born right here in Sioux City. He is just one of several notable people from the city, including:

  • Tommy Bolin: guitarist for Deep Purple with a notable solo career.

  • Macdonald Carey: actor, best known for his performance in Days of Our Lives.

  • Ron Clements: animation director for Disney, who received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for both Treasure Planet and The Princess and the Frog.

  • Sharon Farrell: a film actress in Marlowe and The Stunt Man

  • Jerry Mathers: an actor who played the titular character in Leave it to Beaver

  • Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren: twin sisters who wrote rival advice columns “Ann Landers” and “Dear Abby”

  • Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling: political cartoonist and winner of the 1924 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning

  • Harry Hopkins: close advisor to Franklin Roosevelt and creator of the Works Progress Administration

  • Judy Kimball: female golfer, winner of the 1962 LGPA Championship

  • Dave Bancroft: Baseball Hall-of-Famer, once played for the Sioux City Packers baseball team.

  • Ted Waitt: founder of Gateway, Inc.

  • Tonic-Sol-Fa: acapella band with one member from Sioux City and the rest from the area.

Sioux City has also had its share of famous visitors. Apart from the various concerts and stage acts that have graced our auditoriums and venues, Sioux City has had visits from United States Presidents like Grover Cleveland and John F. Kennedy, writer Oscar Wilde, former British Prime Minister Earl Clement Atlee, and musician Van Cilburn, a guest pianist for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.
