Photograph of Stone Park Rock Formation

Date: 1940

Description: This photograph, taken by Kenneth Grablin, is of a rock formation at the limestone quarry in Stone State Park. Charles Borowski started the quarry in the 1870s, eager to take advantage of the rich limestone deposits that permeate this area. Limestone has been incredibly important for Sioux City as a building material, particularly for brick and for the rich terra-cotta works that the city has been famous for. Remnants of Borowski’s quarry still exist in Stone State Park today, as we can see from this photo taken in 1940.
