Photo from the Santee Reservation
Date: 1918
Description: This is an image taken at a Santee Sioux reservation, in 1918 according to text written on the photo. Men, women, and children are pictured here in a mix of traditional Native American dress and Western style clothing. The photograph was taken at a meeting of chiefs of the tribe. Photographs like this remind us that while the Santee people have faced difficulties and trials, they still hold on to their rich cultural traditions and heritage even as they are forced to adapt to the changing times. The photograph was donated to the museum in 1923 by former mayor, David A. Magee.
Donors: J. P. Kampmeyer and D. A. Magee
